With all of the coronavirus lockdowns in place, we have a lot of time on our hands as of late. We’ve been spending that time scouring the deep corners of the Internet. Skillset is even busy trying to access the Dark Web. We’ve kept out searches a little more grounded. Amidst our searching, we stumbled across something we’ve known about for a quite a while, we just felt it would be a good time to revisit it: dragon’s breath ammo.

What Is Dragon’s Breath Ammo?

Dragon’s breath is a special type of “incendiary effect” round for 12-gauge shotguns. Normally chambered in 12 gauge 2.75-inch shot shells, dragon’s breath ammo consists primarily of magnesium pellets or shards. When fired, the round sparks giving the appearance of a flame like … yes, dragon’s breath. Those sparks can shoot out to around 100 feet. We’ve read claims that it fires out to 300 feet, but we’re a little skeptical of that. Also not sure we’d want it to fire that far.

This brings us to the video above from YouTube OG FPSRussia back in 2011. You remember FPSRussia, right? He’s the Georgia man who put on a Russian accent and filmed himself shooting tons of incredible firearms and gadgets before it was even a cool thing to do; that was before he went to jail for a couple of charges that we won’t get into. He hasn’t posted anything since 2016—mainly because of the legal issues—but his YouTube channel is still up. From full-auto AA-12 shotguns to flamethrowers, there’s quite an arsenal on there. Gun guys can burn through some serious quarantine time going through his library.

Prison time notwithstanding, FPSRussia gave the Dragon’s Breath ammo a good test. He also tested out a few other interesting shotgun rounds, if you want to watch the whole video. As you’ll see, it’s certainly not a home-defense round, unless you want your house to go up in flames. It also typically sells for about $5 per round, so there’s that.
