Straight-walled cartridges have seen a resurgence in certain states that have legalized their use for for deer hunting. Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan are four states that recently legalized the cartridge. The benefits of the cartridge are pretty straight forward — it’s more accurate than handguns using a similar caliber and it has less recoil compared with most deer-hunting shotguns.

There are a number of straight-walled rifle cartridge options on the market, including .444 Marlin, .450 Marlin, .45/70, and .450 Bushmaster. However, there is also a “new kid on the block” in the form of Winchester’s .350 Legend. The jury is still out on performance, but Federal Premium says the cartridge offers “significantly less recoil” than 450 Bushmaster. Federal also says it’s the “fastest straight-wall deer cartridge ever made,” which is a very strong statement. It’s an interesting addition to the growing straight-walled market and Federal just unveiled three new .350 Legend loads.

Federal 350 Legend Straight-Walled

The cartridge works with both modern sporting rifles and bolt-action rifles. It’s also legal for hunting in many areas that prohibit bottleneck centerfire rifle cartridges With that in mind, Federal has introduced three new .350 Legend loads in its Fusion, Power-Shok and Non-Typical lines.

According to Federal, the Fusion line “offers best-in-class expansion”; the Power-Shok line “provides versatile, reliable performance on a wide range of medium game”; and the Non-Typical line “is specifically built for deer hunters.”

The last item on the list is price. Here’s a look at the MSRPs for each load:

  • Fusion 350 Legend 160-grain bonded soft point, 20-count: $32.95
  • Power-Shok 350 Legend 180-grain soft point, 20-count: $26.95
  • Non-Typical 350 Legend 180-grain soft point, 20-count: $26.95
